Madonna and Child
1324
Central tympanum, Cathedral of St. Anastasia, Zadar, Croatia
This work exemplifies the growing informality of images of Virgin seated with the Christ Child. The throne is smaller and less elaborate than in earlier examples, and the child stands on his mother's thigh. Keeping to the old tradition, he is fully clothed.
